Removal services

Remoovaz is an algorithm-driven B2C service marketplace for the home removal/furniture delivery sector. They selected CobbleWeb over other development agencies, after reading our blog, which helped them to better understand marketplace mechanics.

Challenges

Service booking process

User onboarding had to consider complex moving parts underneath each service request, e.g. location, inventory volume, time frame and service level.

Inventory size

Most users don't know how to calculate vehicle space needed for their items. We had to find an easy way for them to select the right moving vehicle.

Business model

The pricing mechanism had to support many variables: van size, hourly rates, level of assistance, date selection markup and platform commission.

Financial flow

The payment system had to be able to handle many complex scenarios, e.g. rescheduling of services which may entail new providers with different rates.

Inventory calculator

We built a user-friendly inventory system that helps users calculate the volume of their household items and then recommends the right size moving van.

It uses convenient dropdown category fields for items commonly found in different rooms of a house. Users can simply select the quantity and size of each item. An additional custom field for unique items uses dimensions to calculate item volume.

Address search engine

A removal platform needs accurate addresses to ensure good user experiences. Google’s popular location API uses GPS coordinates which are not always precise enough.

We prefer Loqate‘s address verification tool which cross-references data from different sources for better accuracy. Unlike Google it even detects unit numbers. Users get dropdown autosuggestions as they start typing, making verification much quicker. Hence better conversion rates.

Add-on services

In addition to the platform’s core offerings of house removal and furniture delivery, Remoovaz also provides add-on services in the form of personal assistants who help with packing, loading and unloading, as well as cleaning services for properties.

Our job was to make sure that these add-on services could be incorporated in a removal service order or contracted as standalone services.

Rate options

Users have access to different price options depending on the date or day of the week and the level of service assistance required. Same day service has a 40% markup, while next day costs 30% and weekends 20% more. Assistants set their own hourly rates which also had to be taken into consideration.

We created a sleek calendar interface that uses clickable elements to clearly show the variances in cost for different service and date permutations.

Rescheduling

When users reschedule a service it often means that the fees change due to an extra markup on the date (e.g. weekends) or a new service provider who has a different hourly rate.

These rescheduling scenarios were dealt with in an efficient manner by emulating airlines who charge an upgrade fee when you change dates. We made sure the payment system is smart enough to automatically recalculate the new fee and charge or pay out the difference.

Service fee management

Fees can be set in a flexible and granular manner. This has helped the client to better monetise different aspects of the business.

Platform fees are divided between support fees and commission, while service provider fees take into account a number of variables.

E.g. home removal fees can be set as an hourly rate per van size, include an hourly packing service rate, and a standard or premium markup for same day, next day or weekend removals.
